How did you come up with the name of your company?
I wanted a name that evoked progression, growth, and sustainability while being specific to children and the unique adjustable nature of the clothes. After batting around a few names, SproutFit was the clear winner!
What does “sustainable fashion” mean to you?
Sustainable fashion embodies a paradigm change, and that means a better world for my son, his kids, and beyond. At the end of the day, sustainable fashion is one spoke in the sustainability wheel, but it’s such an important one given the global scale. Sustainability is something that can be constantly improved upon. Because there are so many opportunities in the supply chain, I feel blessed to be a part of the think tank that continually strives to be better.
What inspired you to start a sustainable baby clothing company?
Conventional baby clothing is designed to be worn a few times. To ensure your baby grows out of clothes quickly (forcing you to re-purchase 7 or more separate sizes in 24 months), baby clothing companies:
– Create short windows of time a child can fit into a size
– Create short windows of time a child can fit into a size
– Construct clothes from low-quality materials built to fall apart quickly
– Have little consideration for actual pain points that plague parents buying clothing for their baby
Even the worst offenders of fast fashion consumption would be hard-pressed to replace their entire wardrobe 7 or more times in 2 years. But, blindly, that’s what we parents expect to endure with our babies.
Before my son Beckham was 12 months old, we had accumulated totes upon totes of clothes he grew out of, or never got to wear. When something finally fit him comfortably, a month later he needed the next size. It became time-consuming and frustrating to weed through clothing that wasn’t solving any of our problems – in fact, they just created more.
I felt duped and wanted to give parents a BETTER alternative. I knew I wasn’t the only parent struggling, so I set out to design clothing that solved problems instead of creating more.
What is your company’s mission?
At its core, our mission is two-fold. We want to create childrenswear that solves problems, instead of creating more. We also aim to inspire parents to begin instilling sustainable, healthy practices in their child’s life early.
Having children represents a time in life that naturally begs for simplicity, and instead of exploiting new parents, we want to be a part of the paradigm change by creating an alternative choice for parents.
Who is your customer?
Our customer is the modern parent looking for baby clothing solutions that save time, money and hassle with a less-is-more approach. They like modern, minimalist basics easily accessorized and personalized. They value eco-friendly fabrics, sustainable design meant to last through growth spurts, and they want to know the clothes they are putting on their children aren’t exploiting someone else’s child.
